The canal system in Shillong, established during the British colonial period, was integral to the city's infrastructure, particularly for irrigation purposes. Constructed between 1907 and 1908, this network efficiently transported water from the Umdienglieng area, situated above St. Peter’s School, to various colonial establishments, including the Raj Bhavan. The water flowed through Bawri Mansion and alongside the wall of Bonnie Brae Estate. At Barik Point, near the Brightwell Gate, an underground tank was designed to split the water flow, directing a portion towards Lum Survey via the area now known as Anjali Cinema. This canal system remained operational until 1978, exemplifying the engineering foresight of the colonial administration in addressing the city's irrigation needs.
