Threads of Time

Weaving Heritage in Meghalaya's Textiles

In the folds and fibres of Meghalaya’s textiles lies a quiet map of heritage, one woven not just with threads, but with stories carried through seasons, mountains, and rain. Each piece, a drapery of place and time, reflects the region’s deep connection to nature, honouring both tradition and the spirit of resilience. The handwoven textiles of the Khasi, Garo, Jaintia and Hajong communities are not merely cloth but bearers of identity. Each motif, be it a geometric form or a floral symbol, is imbued with meaning, representing the beliefs, aspirations, and harmony with the land. This collection in this section invites us not merely to see but to feel, to recognize in the fibres a testament to a way of life. It is an exploration, both of the tactile beauty and the reverence each textile holds. In an era that seems to rush forward, these works remind us of the value of slowing down, of listening to what is spoken in silence, from one generation to the next.

Meghalaya Goes Global: Celebrities in Indigenous Style

During their performances in Shillong in 2024, global music icons Ed Sheeran and Bryan Adams were honoured with traditional Meghalaya silk shawls by Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma and Arts and Culture Minister Shri Paul Lyngdoh. This gesture symbolised the state's warm hospitality and recognition of their contributions to music. The events were part of Meghalaya's initiative to position Shillong as a premier destination for international music events, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage and commitment to promoting the arts.

The Ryndia or eri silk is a traditionally handspun fabric hailing from the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. It has gained wide popularity and momentum in the global market because of its peaceful and sustainable mode of production, apart from its unique appearance and embracing texture. This fabric was recently accorded with the Geographical Indication (GI) in April, 2025.

Eri Silk from Meghalaya was recently awarded the prestigious GI tag, recognizing its unique heritage and cultural significance. This exquisite silk has been meticulously preserved and woven for generations by the indigenous tribes of the region, especially the Khasi community. What sets Eri silk apart is its ethical method of production. The silkworms are not killed, hence it is also "Ahimsa silk", or non-violent silk. This compassionate approach, combined with its rich texture and natural warmth, makes Eri silk a true testament to sustainable and traditional craftsmanship.
